DESIGN
The obverse of the coin, which is actually the foot of the volcano, features the effigy of Her Majesty Elizabeth II surrounded by the following inscriptions: the Queen’s name, the face value of the coin, its issuing country and year.
The extraordinary design and shape of the coin emblematically reflect the turbulent history of Vesuvius and the ancient city of Pompeii. It is ornately embellished with Roman mosaic motifs and images of Bacchian rites from the villa of Mysteries in Pompeii.
