The Beauty of the Universe Supernova 2024 20 Euro Sterling Silver Coin – Austrian Mint
The coin “Supernova” from the series “Beauty of the Universe” depicts the Crab Nebula, which is about 6500 light years away from our solar system. Both the embossing and the detailed image of this celestial object, taken by the Hubble Space Telescope, give the impression of a massive explosion. More than seven thousand years ago, there was a single massive star about ten times the mass of the Sun at this site, whose internal pressure literally tore the matter apart.
Since then, this matter has been moving away from the center of the explosion at a speed of several million kilometers per hour. In the centre itself, only a tiny successor star, just 15 kilometres in size, remains – called the Krebs pulsar, a neutron star that rotates 30 times on its axis in one second. Thanks to its magnetic field, it releases large amounts of energy to the dispersing matter, illuminating the Crab Nebula from the inside.
