Raspberry Moon brings a time of great change as the raspberry’s flowers turn to fruit, and teach us to be gentle and kind. It’s the seventh teaching from Grandmother Moon in Anishinaabe tradition that views the moon as a living relation who makes 13 appearances throughout the year to watch over Mother Earth’s children and light their paths with her gentle wisdom.
In July, raspberries begin to ripen, and if we tear them from their branches, we will feel the sting of the thorns. Raspberries must be harvested with gentleness. In doing so, we honour the plant and ensure it continues to flourish. Raspberry Moon teaches us to raise our family the same way. Children thrive when treated with loving kindness. And life will encounter fewer barbs.

DESIGN
Algonquin artist Frank Polson has created a captivating image of a full moon filling the sky as it sits low on the horizon behind a tree at the height of its lush summertime growth. A cluster of four raspberries appears on the left, their succulent flesh portrayed in vibrant red. Black, sliver-like thorns protect the plant’s fresh new blooms that are illustrated with a series of concentric round shapes in black, green and red. These vibrantly coloured shapes, and those on the leaves, represent the spirit world, the universal life force that lies within and animates all things.
