Steamboat Willie
Steamboat Willie is a 1928 black and white film featuring a cartoon mouse. The mouse serves as a deck hand whose job is to get livestock onto the steamboat. His girlfriend tries to catch a ride, but misses the boat. The mouse then has to use a hook to pick her up and bring her aboard. She then drops her sheet music for “Turkey in the Straw” as he lowers her onto the deck of the boat. A goat eats the sheet music and the pair turn the goat into a music player. The mouse uses pots, pans, barrels, a washboard, a cat, a pig and many other animals as instruments to accompany the music coming out of the goat. In the end, the captain of the ship does not approve of this goofing off and puts him to work peeling potatoes as punishment. This animated short, now in the public domain, helped to kick off the good fortunes of its creator, Walt Disney.
