Struck in 1.125 ounces of pure gold, this stunning $350 coin brings to life an encounter with Canada’s grizzly bear. Few species conjure images of the rugged Canadian wilderness like the grizzly. The furry king of our northern and western forests is a symbol of might on land, but it’s comfortable in the water too. Whether cooling off on a hot day or chasing salmon prey, a swimming grizzly bear is a vision of strength even in an unguarded moment. The mintage is extremely limited to only 450 pieces.
Designed by Canadian wildlife artist W. Allan Hancock, the swimming grizzly bear is shown emerging from the water, with water dripping from its snout and fur as it heads to shore. Also engraved on the reverse are the word “Canada” and the year “2020.” The obverse features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt.
The grizzly bear is a North American subspecies of the brown bear, which is one of three bear species found in Canada—the others are the larger-sized polar bear and the smaller black bear.
