The 2006 Canadian Specimen 7-Coins Set includes all of the standard issue coins for 2006.
This year, the magnificent snowy owl spreads its wings on the limited-edition one-dollar coin featured in the 2006 Canadian Specimen Collector Set.
The largest bird species in the arctic, Nyctea scandiaca is also one of the most beautiful birds in North America. Its predominantly white plumage embodies the splendour of winter, a fact that made the snowy owl the obvious choice for Quebec’s avian symbol that was adopted in 1987. This snow-ridden province is home to many snowy owls. They breed above the treeline on the arctic tundra and may migrate to the southern regions of the province during the winter months in search of food, so sighting a snowy owl is a rare treat indeed!
Although a protected species, the snowy owl’s preference for the arctic has contributed greatly to its conservation; its remote breeding areas have been largely untouched by human development. This underscores the importance of preserving the environment for all living species that depend upon it – and makes the highly symbolic 2006 Specimen Set a ‘must-have’ for every collection!
