The Lithuanian Mint would like to invite you to embark on a journey of discovery in its new four-coin series, Mythical Creatures, each of which tells a unique story. The second coin in the series, Sirens, depicts the owners of fabulous voices. Their siren song is the strongest weapon shrouded in legend. The obverse of the coin is divided into four, each containing elements of the coins in the Mythical Creatures series: the Labyrinth of the Minotaur, Sirens, the Harpy Nest, and the Kraken. These mythical creatures are often encountered in Greek mythology. The reverse of the aged silver coin in the latest collection depicts these charming yet treacherous sirens. Legends and stories say that there were two of them at first. It was only in later works that a story of three sirens began to be told. They always stood on the rocky edge of their island, all covered in the bones of the dead – a symbol of what a siren’s song can do. The song was heard from afar by sailors approaching the island where the sirens lived. The song of the sirens was impossible to resist, and they lured sailors to the rocky shore, where their ships were wrecked and sailors themselves perished.
