The first issue of the new Series Age of Sails is dedicated to the most famous ship in the history of discovery – the Santa Maria. The motive of the Silver Eagle coin depicts a colorful representation of the Santa Maria in full splendor. Next to the ship is a small portrait of Christopher Columbus. The reverse shows the American bald eagle, the national bird of the United States. The eagle is enframed by 13 stars and the words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA”, “1OZ. FINE SILVER – ONE DOLLAR”. Together with the much smaller ships Pinta and Niña, the Santa Maria was one of the expedition ships on Christopher Columbus’ world-famous explorations. In August 1492, Columbus set out to explore a sea route to India and instead discovered America. However, in December 1492, the Santa Maria then ran aground off the island of Hispaniola, which today corresponds to Haiti and the Dominican Republic, and could not be salvaged. The limited silver coin in color is delivered in a capsule including a product card.
