The Powerful Owl is the largest owl in Australasia. It is native to eastern and southeastern Australia and found mainly on the coastal side of the Great Dividing Range. The owls have large yellow eyes set into a dark grey and brown facial mask. Their legs are feathered and they have enormous yellow to orange feet with very sharp talons.
Their low, deep double hoot can be heard at any time of the year, but it is more frequent during the breeding season in autumn.
Each coin is struck from 1oz of 99.99% pure silver in proof quality.
The coin’s reverse features a coloured Powerful Owl with a smaller owl flying in the background. The design includes the inscription POWERFUL OWL.
The coin is issued as legal tender under the authority of the Government of Tuvalu. The Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the monetary denomination, the 2018 year-date and the coin’s weight and fineness appear on its obverse.
