Creating five versions between 1801 to 1805 by French artist Jacques-Louis David, “Napoleon Crossing the Alps” is famously known for its emphasis on the historical subject, classical ideals and precise composition.
The painting depicts Napoleon Bonaparte, the French military and political leader, astride a spirited stallion as he crosses the treacherous Alps during the Italian campaign of the Napoleonic Wars. The background largely obscured by rocks depicted French troops along a large canon and further down the line fly the national flag of France. The depiction of Napoleon as a heroic and powerful individual greatly contributed to the glorification of his image during this period, albeit the artistic liberties taken by David with historical accuracy.
David’s paintings often depicted historical subjects in a heroic and idealized manner, emphasizing on noble virtues, strength, and moral integrity. As such, figures in his paintings often exhibit a calm and stoic demeanour, even in moments of great historical or personal significance.
The composition and dramatic portrayal of Napoleon in the painting have made it an iconic representation of the leader and a significant work in the Neoclassical art movement.
On a canvas of 165 x 125mm, a new minting technique called “Tri-Metal ” was applied to give this piece its remarkable weight while keeping its proportions true to the actual painting. This is made possible by combining 750g of Zinc as a center layer and 120g of copper as a base with a top layer of 2.5 oz of 999 fine Silver, resulting in a high relief. This is a limited edition of 399 pieces only. Each piece is packaged and delivered with a Certificate verifying its edition number and authenticity.
