This extraordinary Silver Proof coin is the result of the very first collaboration between The Royal Mint of Great Britain and a former Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint, in this case, numismatic legend John Mercanti. Mercanti was the 12th Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint and has produced over 100 coin and medal designs over the course of his career, including the Type 1 Heraldic Eagle reverse design. Imagery for the coin pairs a lion and an eagle, creatures that are associated with the identity of each nation. Additionally, in more than four decades and over one hundred coin and medal designs, this 2023 dated Lion and Eagle coin represents Mr. Mercanti’s first-ever image to feature a lion.
Obverse: His Majesty King Charles III is depicted on the obverse. The mirrored field surrounding the effigy contains the inscriptions “CHARLES III,” “D.G. REX. F.D.,” “2 POUNDS,” and “2023.” The left-facing rendition of the monarch was created by renowned British sculptor Martin Jennings in 2022.
Reverse: An American bald eagle is portrayed standing beside a Lion of England on the reverse, with the artist’s initials “JM” located near the lion’s outstretched paw. Each creature is intently gazing in the same direction, a pose which is emblematic of the peaceful coexistence and the steadfast support between the nations. The inscription “THE LION AND THE EAGLE” sweeps above the image, while the date “2023” is positioned between two curving branches of laurel below. The use of laurel to symbolize victory and strength can be traced back to the civilizations of ancient Greece and Rome.
The coin will arrive as packaged by The Royal Mint, encapsulated and housed in original mint packaging, accompanied by a numbered certificate of authenticity.
