Gustav Klimt gained fame thanks to a very decorative style; golden back- ground, elaborate ornaments and contrasted colors, the hallmark of his individual approach, were seen as the rebellion against the traditional art. Nonetheless, the academic circles of that time criticized his works of art as controversy. Today, the legacy of Gustav Klimt is still inspiring consecutive generations of artists.
The fourth painting of the series – the “Medicine” – was presented in March 1901 at the 10th Secession Exhibition. It features a flamboyant goddess of health and cleanliness Hygieia with the Aesculapian snake around her arm and the cup of Lethe in her hand.
