LUCKY ANGEL 2023 1 Pound 1 oz Pure Silver Proof Coin – St. Helena
How do certain coins become known as ‘lucky’ coins? In 1792, Augustine Dupre was commissioned by King Louis XVI to design a new French coinage and presented a design featuring an angel on a pedestal. While the design proved popular, Dupre soon fell under suspicion of harbouring revolutionary ideas and was sentenced to execution. But he somehow managed to escape the cold touch of the guillotine, supposedly by bribing his guards with one of his Angel Coins.
The story took hold, and the Angel Coin quickly gained a reputation as a ‘lucky’ coin. 19th Century navy captains wouldn’t leave port without an Angel in their purses. Napoleon himself was not beyond its charms and is believed to have carried one everywhere, only to fatefully lose it the day before his final defeat at Waterloo. The legend continued deep into the 20th Century, with pilots fighting in Vietnam and Iraq flying with a ‘lucky’ Angel in their cockpits.
Design:
Inspired by the French Angel coin Augustine Dupre designed back in 18th century, well known as Napoleon’s Lucky Angel coin. Now, the ‘lucky’ Angel coin is reimagined with this elegant but powerful design by celebrated artist Chiara Principe. The Angel strides towards us with the world at her feet, carrying and surrounded by laurel wreaths to represent honour, victory and peace, while the bees either side of her wings create a connection back to Napoleon who adopted the humble, hardworking and co-operative bee as the symbol of his Imperial reign.
