Coin Story
Historically seen as the father of Gods and men, Zeus is also known in Greek mythology as the God of both the Sky and Thunder. He ruled the Olympians of Mount Olympus in Greece as a father rules a family, and was the archetypal Greek deity. It is said that Zeus was the youngest son of the Titans Cronus and Rhea. When he was born, his father Cronus intended to swallow him as he had done to all of Zeus’s siblings. But his mother Rhea hid the new born child in a cave. When he had grown up, Zeus caused Cronus to vomit up his sisters and brothers, who joined him in wresting control of the universe from the Titans and Cronus their king. Having vanquished his father, Zeus and his brothers Poseidon and Hades divided up creation. Poseidon received the sea as his domain, Hades the underworld, and Zeus the sky along with supreme authority on earth. Zeus fathered many children including the heroes Perseus and Heracles, and the Gods Athena and Apollo. He was also represented as the God of Justice and Mercy, a protector of the weak and punisher of the wicked.
This coin marks the first release in a series of five ‘Gods of Ancient Greece’.
Design
Reverse Design:
This high relief, rectangular coin, has been inspired by ancient sculpture, coins, vases and architecture, while also channelling classical and renaissance paintings of this iconic God of Ancient Greece. Zeus, ‘the cloud gatherer’, has been captured in a moment, seated in majesty, with his sceptre spreading thunderbolts across the sky. These elements, along with an eagle at his side, emphasize his divine status as the father of Gods and men. In the background, an Ancient Greek temple is set against a dramatic highly polished sky.
Obverse Design:
This features the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
