The ornate scrollwork of a Victorian gate is a lasting work of fine art, even as it marks where one world ends and another begins. Stretching across this fine silver coin, the white bronze gate bears more than just a passing resemblance to the main gates of the Halifax Public Gardens, whose flower beds and bandstand are the epitome of Victorian-era elegance on the reverse.
SPECIAL FEATURES
A WORLD OF BEAUTY: Celebrate the beauty of Canada’s gardens! This dimensional design combines two of the most well known (and beloved) features of the Halifax Public Gardens: its main gate, and the bandstand that is at the centre of this public space.
SMALL-SCALE REPRODUCTION: Fashioned from white bronze, the gate on the reverse captures the elaborate, antique artistry of the Gardens’ often-photographed wrought iron gates!
PUSHING THE LIMITS: Extensive research and development were necessary to determine just the right amount of metal to achieve the gate’s intricate appearance without sacrificing durability—and without obscuring your view of the garden behind it!
WEATHERING TIME: Adding to the authenticity of it all, the gate on the reverse is carefully painted to give it an appropriately aged look—like metalwork that has been exposed to time and the elements.
DESIGN
Designed by Canadian artist Margaret Best, the reverse features a world of carefully cultivated beauty beyond the gate that stretches from rim to rim. This ornamental gate closely resembles the main gates of the Halifax Public Gardens, whose ornate scrollwork has been carefully adapted to retain its century-old aesthetic on a smaller scale, without sacrificing the element’s durability. Paint gives the metalwork an appropriately weathered look; behind it, a full colour image invites the viewer to let their eyes and imagination wander towards the colourful flowerbeds, shrubs and trees, or the often-photographed bandstand that is at the very heart of this National Historic Site of Canada. The obverse features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt.
