The third issue of the series Age of Sails is dedicated to the Viking ship in which Leif Eriksson set out for America – about 500 years before Columbus. The motive presents the Viking ship on a turbulent sea. In the background is a rocky landscape. Above the sail of the so-called Knorr is a portrait of the Viking. The lower edge of the coin shows the name “Eriksson’s Ship” and the year of issue. The reverse depicts the American bald eagle and the 13 stars of the founding states. The words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “1OZ. FINE SILVER – ONE DOLLAR” are framing the Eagle design. After the Viking Bjarni Herjulfsson had already discovered the unknown land, but had not entered it, this aroused the curiosity of Leif Eriksson. He bought Herjulfsson’s ship, set off in the year 1000 AD with a crew of 35 and also found the land. The discovery of America by the Vikings was long considered a legend – but now seems to have been proven by the discovery of Scandinavian buildings and tools. The limited silver coin in color is delivered in a capsule including a product card.
