The third release of the Pirates of the Caribbean™ Series is dedicated to the Empress™, a Chinese sailing ship from the 2007 Disney™ hit Pirates of the Caribbean – At World’s End™.
Struck by the New Zealand Mint from one ounce of 99.99% pure gold, the motive of the premium bullion coin features an image of the ship as well as a stylized depiction of its captain, Sao Feng. The inscriptions “THE EMPRESS”, “PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN”, “1 oz 9999 Fine Gold” and the Disney™ logo and copyright are also included in the design. The reverse features the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II and the inscriptions “250 DOLLARS,” “ELIZABETH II,” “2021” and “NIUE”.
Once the flagship of the Chinese pirate lord Sao Feng, after his death the Empress™ passes into the command of Elizabeth Swann, who was appointed captain by the dying Sao Feng. When Captain Swann later transferred to the Black Pearl™ for warfare, she left the ship to Tai Huang, Sao Feng’s first mate. Unlike European ships, a junk has no keel and the sides are nearly vertical. The triangular to pentagonal sails have bamboo ribs sewn into them, which give the sail special stability and flexibility. The Pirates of the Caribbean™ – The Empress™ Premium Bullion Coin in gold is limited to only 250 pieces worldwide. The coin is delivered in a protective capsule.
