With its multi-tined rack of antlers, the elk or wapiti (Cervus canadensis) cuts a distinctive figure in the grasslands and forests of western Canada and Ontario. The second-largest member of the deer family is particularly impressive to see or hear during the rutting season, when the male emits a chilling bugle that shatters nature’s silence. DESIGN
The reverse design by Canadian big game sculptor Karl Lansing presents a stunning rendition of one of Canada’s most iconic species: the elk (Cervus canadensis). Magnificent gold plating highlights the sculptured details that convey the ungulate’s wild beauty through the uniquely shaped, silver embellishment that rises up from the coin’s surface. The elk’s solid build and imposing antlers are on full display, as is the varied texture of its fur.
