“At about a ¼ past 11 o’clock we cross’d the Antarctic Circle…and are undoubtedly the first and only Ship that ever cross’d that line.” – Captain Cook, 17 January 1773
On January 17, 1773, James Cook and his crew, aboard the HMS Resolution, made the first recorded crossing of the Antarctic circle, and became the first Europeans to lay eyes on the unspoiled wonders of a pristine icy wilderness. The Antarctic circle is the most southerly of the five major circles of latitude that mark the map of Earth, the region south of this circle is known as the Antarctic. This incredible feat of exploration and courage was a turning point, opening up new horizons and inspiring new generations of explorers.
