Since the first football game took place in Toronto, Ontario, on November 9, 1861, the game has grown to become one of Canada’s most popular sports. Today, the Canadian Football League† annually hosts the Grey Cup® Championship, which is followed and celebrated by millions each year. The 2012 edition of this world-class sporting event represents the 100th time that Canadian football teams have vied for Lord Earl Grey’s coveted trophy since it was first presented by the famed Governor-General in 1909.

The Coin:
This painted cupronickel coin has a diameter of 35 millimetres. The reverse design by Canadian artist Filip Mroz highlights several important elements for all eight Canadian Football League teams, including their team logo, team colours, and past Grey Cup championship wins. In the foreground, half of the polished field is filled with a side- view of a football, rendered in exceptional textural detail with its laces crossing the centre of the image. The football features a full-colour black-outlined white bronco of the Calgary Stampeders logo. In the background rises the Grey Cup. The reverse highlights the Stampeders’ past Grey Cup championship wins with the bilingual red text ‘SIX-TIME CHAMPIONS/SIX FOIS CHAMPIONS.’ The reverse also features the engraved text ‘CANADA,’ the year ‘2012’ to commemorate the 100th Grey Cup Game, and the face value of ’25 CENTS.’ The obverse features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt.
