Like any major invention, the electric light bulb was developed over many years, by many people. Since the early 1800s, when the first arc lamps were demonstrated to the public, inventors – among them two Canadians, Henry Woodward and Mathew Evans – looked for a filament material that would not melt or burn but would produce light inside a glass tube. Platinum was a strong contender, but it was exceedingly expensive, and carbon became a better alternative. Ultimately, it was Thomas Edison, who first patented and marketed the incandescent light bulb that people everywhere rely upon today.
