Coin Story
The Battle of Midway was fought in June 1942 near the Midway Atoll, six months after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.
Thanks in part to major advances in code breaking, the United States was able to pre-empt and counter Japan’s planned ambush of its few remaining aircraft carriers. The United States Navy, under Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, inflicted irreparable damage on the Imperial Japanese Navy, commanded by Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto, effectively destroying Japan’s naval strength.
The Battle of Midway could be considered one of the most decisive battles of World War II. The victory allowed the United States and its allies to move into an offensive position – an important turning point in the Pacific campaign.
