Powered Flight in Canada: The First 50 Years Coin Series
This 1992 Canadian $20 de Havilland Gipsy Moth Sterling Silver Coin is part of the first ten-coin series commemorating the Powered Flight in Canada: The First 50 Years. Each coin commemorates an aviation hero and his achievements. These coins are composed of sterling silver and have a 24 karat gold covered cameo portrait of an aviation hero. This coin is the sixth coin in the series and features the de Havilland Gipsy Moth.
Originally from Great Britain, the de Havilland Moth, a light two-seat aircraft, became the standard equipment of most flying clubs of the world in the 1920’s. Its success soon led to the establishment of the de Havilland subsidiaries in Canada and Australia. In the early thirties, the Moth aircraft, renowned for its long distance performance and reliability became a familiar sight across Canada as a Flying Club aircraft, and was subsequently used for varied purposes such as training R.C.A.F. pilots, bush flying, as well as exploration and pleasure flights.
