COIN STORY:
The folktale of Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp is one of the most popular tales from 1,001 Nights, although it wasn’t added to the collection until the 18th century by French scholar Antoine Galland. A classic ‘rags to riches’ tale, it features a young hero, Aladdin, who has to learn an important lesson; an exotic setting; a bit of magic; a beautiful heroine; and an evil villain!
In the tale a sorcerer befriends Aladdin and then attempts to double-cross him, eventually leaving him trapped in a cave full of treasure. Fortunately, Aladdin still has a magic ring lent to him by the sorcerer. When he rubs his hands in despair, he inadvertently rubs the ring, and a genie appears, who takes him home to his mother. Aladdin is still carrying the lamp that the sorcerer wanted from the cave, and when his mother tries to clean it, a second, far more powerful genie appears. With the aid of the genie of the lamp, Aladdin becomes rich and powerful and marries princess Badroulbadour, the Emperor’s daughter.
