ABOUT THE COIN
Times change, but Britannia, our silent guardian, remains steadfast and vigilant, a symbol of tradition, continuity and the stability of our nation. Christopher Ironside’s much-loved portrait adorned the very first 50p coins of the new decimal era. People believed in Britannia, a welcome and reassuring presence in a time of change. Though she has never left the coinage – remaining on coins already in circulation, and appearing on the flagship Britannia coin– she was mourned when a new 50p was issued in 2008,
From 2015 Britannia will be the heroine of the nation’s £2 – and you can own an exclusive edition of this eagerly anticipated coin. Struck to Proof standard, the highest possible quality, your coin features a contemporary take on a national icon. Antony Dufort’s interpretation is respectful of times past, but recasts Britannia for a brand new era. It is time to celebrate Britannia’s renaissance.
Britannia first appeared on the coins of the Roman Emperor Hadrian circa AD 119. The Romans withdrew from Britain in the fifth century AD, but Britannia’s symbolism would endure – and she was revived for the coinage of Charles II in 1672. Britannia took on added significance as the United Kingdom was born, a true national icon for the people of these islands to rally around. Antony Dufort’s Britannia is a wonderful contemporary reworking of the Britannia imagined in the seventeenth century.
In the Victorian era a mighty maritime-themed Britannia became a figurehead to reflect the values, achievements and pride of the nation – stability and freedom at home and a vast empire that at its height would rule over a third of the world’s population and landmass. In contemporary art Britannia acquired the trident of Poseidon, her Greek hoplite shield depicted complete with Union Flag. The British Lion, adopted from the Royal Arms, often lay at her feet.
