In 2021, in honor of the 35th anniversary of the American Silver Eagle Program, the U.S. Mint has introduced a brand new reverse design for the first time in the history of the series! Dubbed the Type-2, the newly designed reverse features a dramatic Eagle Landing image, a significant change from the classic Heraldic Eagle (Type-1) graphic. As the historic design transition occurs, the 2021 date has been minted upon both the Type-1 and Type-2 Silver Eagle coins. The last time two different designs were struck on a U.S. silver dollar in the same year was a century ago in 1921, when the Peace Dollar replaced the Morgan Dollar.
Obverse: The obverse features Lady Liberty strolling towards the sunrise with a bouquet of oak and laurel branches in her grasp. The young woman is illustrated wrapped in an American flag and wearing a Phrygian cap, which symbolizes the pursuit of liberty. Inscribed “LIBERTY,” “2021” and “IN GOD WE TRUST.” For the first time since the series inception, the Type-2 Silver Eagle includes the initials “AW,” crediting renowned early 20th century sculptor Adolph A. Weinman with the patriotic imagery. Mr. Weinman’s iconic vision of Liberty is borrowed from the Walking Liberty Half Dollar introduced in 1916.
Type-1 Reverse: Representing freedom and peace, a heraldic eagle is depicted on the Type-1 reverse, grasping an olive branch and arrows. Inscribed “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “1 OZ. FINE SILVER,” “ONE DOLLAR,” and “E PLURIBUS UNUM.” The design by 12th U.S. Mint Chief Engraver John Mercanti was inspired by the Great Seal of the United States, which was adopted in 1782. Type-2 Reverse: An exquisitely rendered eagle is depicted on the reverse as it prepares to land. The breathtaking creature clutches a branch of oak, which symbolizes strength, honor and longevity. The Eagle Landing image is encircled by the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” “1 OZ. FINE SILVER” and “ONE DOLLAR.” The image is an example of the work of award-winning science illustrator Emily Damstra, creator of more than forty coin and medal designs for the Mints of the U.S. and Canada.
This exciting Type-1 and Type-2 2021 American Silver Eagle bullion coin set was submitted to the coin grading experts at the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) for review. Featuring perfectly sharp strikes, flawless surfaces and outstanding eye appeal, each coin was awarded the NGC’s highest grade of Mint State 70. The coins are encapsulated in separate, sonically sealed NGC protective holders, each accompanied by a Silver Eagle reverse image themed certification label.
