1981 UK Proof Annual 6 Coin Set – Royal Mint (TONED COIN) (PRE-OWNED)
Annual set for the year 1981, featuring six coins struck to proof standard. You might remember the year for the wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer and a British Eurovision win for the band Bucks Fizz. Included in this set is a 1981 50p, a 10p piece and a large-style 5p (resized in 1989). Also included: a 1981 2p, 1p and 1/2p. The Halfpenny would be demonetised in 1984. This set does not contain a 20p (introduced in 1982) or a £1 (1983).
Each piece in the set features Arnold Machin’s portrait of Her Majesty the Queen, used for the first decimal coins from 1968 through until 1984. The coins in this set are minted in cupronickel like contemporary circulating coinage but to a superior proof standard. Proof coins have a finer finish than the coins you’ll find in your change, achieved with multiple strikes of hand finished dies. The set comes in a protective plastic sleeve which allows you to view both sides of each coin without incurring damage. This is enclosed within a black card envelope with embossed silver lettering, original to the set.
You might note some toning to the coins which is typical for these sets several decades after they were issued.
