Coin Story
The Battle of Gettysburg took place on 1-3 July 1863, in and near the town of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. It was one of the largest and bloodiest battles of the American Civil War with over 50,000 casualties.
The battle lasted three days before concluding in a victory for General George G. Meade’s Union Army. “Pickett’s Charge”, an all or nothing infantry assault ordered by the Confederate General Robert E. Lee and led by General Pickett, is considered to have turned the battle in the Union’s favour. The Union’s soldiers managed to repulse the attack, resulting in huge losses for the Confederate army and halting Lee’s invasion of the North.
This not only sealed the South’s defeat, but catapulted Abraham Lincoln to victory and ultimately provided momentum for the passage of the Thirteenth Amendment, permanently freeing all slaves in America.
