The ‘The Whale’ coin is the second issue in the ‘Dot Art’ series. The impossible has been made possible using the enhanced Smartminting©️ technology and brings the whale to life. The coin has black proof finish and is partly made in colour, struck on a 3 oz pure silver 65mm blank in the highest quality. Coin description
The reverse of the coin depicts the whale in the centre of the coin. The whale symbolizes peace, compassion, and love. The blue colours represent the sea and the yellow and red as the setting sun with the beautiful coloured sky, composed of dot art & pointillism.
The obverse side of the coin depicts the unique Coat of Arms with the same dot-art and the inscriptions: “REPUBLIC OF PALAU” (the issuing country), “2021” (the year of issue), “DOT ART” (the name of the series) and “20 Dollars” (the face value).
Background information
The whales symbolize peace, compassion, and love. They are mainly known for their songs, which, it is believed, they have learned from other whales or even from birds and humans. The whales song can be heard thousands of kilometres in the ocean.
Whales are mammals that live in water and can be recognized by the spray holes on their heads with which they breathe. Like us, they need air to breathe and give birth to live young, unlike most fish that filter oxygen from the water with their gills and lay eggs. Whales play a unique role in our fight against climate change. They store large amounts of CO2 in their body during their lifetime. When they die, they take it to the bottom of the ocean, where it remains buried.
“Dot Art & Pointillism”
Pointillism / DOT art is a technique of painting in which small, distinct dots of color are applied in patterns to form an image. Georges Seurat and Paul Signac developed the technique in 1886, branching from Impressionism. The term “Pointillism” was coined by art critics in the late 1880s to ridicule the works of these artists, but is now used without its earlier mocking connotation. The movement Seurat began with this technique is known as Neo-impressionism. The Divisionists used a similar technique of patterns to form images, though with larger cube-like brushstrokes.
