The Thompson Submachine Gun is one of the world’s most famous firearms, a weapon used by both ruthless gangsters and battle-tested GIs. It was a pair of Thompsons that Al “Scarface” Capone used to rub out seven members of Bugs Moran’s gang in Chicago’s infamous St. Valentine’s Day Massacre on February 14, 1929. In fact, the popularity of Thompson Submachine Guns with gangsters in the ’20s and ’30s led to Congress passing the 1934 National Firearms Act that required owners of fully automatic weapons to register them with the agency later known as the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). Ever heard of famed Depression-era bank robber George “Machine Gun” Kelly? Yup, he used a Thompson, too! And during WWII, more than 1.5 million Thompsons were produced for our troops serving overseas.
A Favorite Of America’s Combat Troops
The first weapon to be labelled and marketed as a “submachine gun,” the Thompson was the creation of John T. Thompson (1860–1940), a U.S. Army officer who rose to the rank of brigadier general. The “Tommy Gun” has gone through a few names during its existence, each of which highlights a certain point in time or a certain function and intent. The full name of the gun, The Thompson Submachine Gun, or just the Thompson Machine Gun, was used by the U.S. military for 33 years, from 1928 to 1971, serving admirably in WWII, the Korean War, and in Viet Nam, proving itself to be as effective in jungle combat as it was across Europe where its rugged dependability and knock-down firepower made it a favorite with combat troops. It’s no wonder DC Comics’ venerable Sgt. Rock was always armed with a Thompson as he led the Combat Happy Joes of Easy Company into battle.
