Shawnee National Forest is located in southern Illinois, and is actually a wide swath of land that was once exhausted farmland. In an effort to reclaim and rebuild the soil erosion caused by decades of farming, the administration of President Franklin D. Roosevelt used the Civilian Conservation Corps during the 1930s and 1940s to not only put Americans to work, but also to regrow the forests in the Shawnee Hills. This is commemorated on the 2016 5 oz ATB Shawnee Silver Coin, and has been further enhanced with high quality color application, and comes with special box and certificate.
Enhancement was done by a private mint in Germany.
