The guinea was once the most respected and internationally recognized coinage in the world. First issued by England in 1663, the guinea gold coins went through various designs and were issued by England and its many overseas colonies for nearly 200 years. The design of the famed Spade Guinea makes its return on a silver bullion coin issued for St. Helena.
The guinea was a gold coin issued by England first in 1663 during the reign of King Charles II. The gold coin was the first machine-coin gold piece from Englands Royal Mint and it would eventually become an international symbol of Englands growing power and influence during the 17th and 18th centuries.
Saint Helena is the issuing nation of these beautiful Spade Guinea Shield Silver Coins. Located in the South Atlantic Ocean, Saint Helena is a volcanic island that was first discovered by Portuguese sailors in 1502 and eventually came into British control through a charter issued by Oliver Cromwell.
On the obverse of the 2018 Saint Helena Spade Guinea Shield Silver Coin is the depiction of Queen Elizabeth II. This is the third-generation portrait of Her Majesty to feature on British coinage and was designed in 1985 by Raphael Maklouf. It is accompanied on this face by engravings of the Queens name, year of issue, the nation of issue, face value, and the name of the East India Company.
The reverse of all Saint Helena Spade Guinea Shield Silver Coins includes the Spade Shield version of the royal arms. The Spade Shield arose in 1714 by King George I, the Spade Shield reflects the recent union of the crowns of England and Scotland with the lions on the top half, and the merger of the House of Hanover (of which George I was Elector) is reflected with the white horse on the bottom half. King George III added the Spade Shield design to circulation guineas in 1787.
