Queen Victoria is credited with playing a pivotal role in Britain’s progress during a time of rapid technological and social change. Born Alexandrina Victoria on 24 May, 1819, at Kensington Palace, London, she ascended the throne in 1837 at age 18.
A strong advocate of the British Empire, she was active until her death on 22 January 1901 after reigning for almost 65 years. In that time, Britain’s Empire had expanded to cover about one fifth of the Earth’s surface, making Queen Victoria empress to almost a quarter of the world’s population.
The coin’s reverse depicts four effigies of Queen Victoria that have featured on Australian coinage, with the St Edward’s Crown in the centre. These effigies include the ‘Young Head Portrait’, ‘Jubilee Portrait’, ‘Old Head Portrait’ and ‘Young Head with Banksia Portrait’. Also featured in the reverse design are two stylised wattle branches, the inscription ‘QUEEN VICTORIA 200th ANNIVERSARY’ and The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark.
The coin is housed in a classic display case with a clear lid. Packaged with an illustrated shipper, each coin is accompanied by a numbered Certificate of Authenticity.
