At a height of 4,478 meters (14,692 feet), it is one of the highest peaks in the Alps and Europe. It was not conquered until 1865, when a group led by Edward Whymper reached the summit.

The coin’s edge is engraved with Edward Whymper’s famous quote from the summit: «At 1.40 p.m. the world was at our feet, and the Matterhorn was conquered. Hurrah! Not a footstep could be seen.» 4 of the 7 members of the team lost their lives on the descent. In their memory, these fearless men are immortalized on the reverse.
