The Taj Mahal, a magnificent mausoleum, was completed in 1648 in Agra, India. The Great Mogul Shah Jahan had this masterpiece built in honour of his late wife Mumtaz Mahal, who passed away in 1631. The name Taj Mahal, which means ‘crown of the palace’, is a tribute to her.
The construction period lasted 22 years. The core of the building, the dome and the filigree minarets are made of bricks fired on site and clad both inside and out with gleaming white marble slabs. Decorated with a multitude of precious stones from distant lands, it attracts around 5 million visitors every year.
The freestanding coin with an antique finish is already the 4th issue in this successful series. The ultra-high relief on both sides impressively highlights the special architectural form of the building. In the back of both sides you can see two interior views of the tomb.
Just as the Taj Mahal is a monument to eternal love, this exquisite coin is a numismatic work of art of poignant beauty.
