DESIGN
Based on a photograph captured by Canadian nature photographer Adam Hill, the reverse travels to the Northwest Territories where the beauty of the untamed wilderness takes centre stage. The application of vibrant colour over engraving allows for a life-like recreation of the original photograph, which captures a tranquil setting in the land of the midnight sun. Two float planes rest on the calm surface of the Mackenzie River, not far from the lights of Fort Simpson, N.W.T., seen in the distance. The northern sky steals the show in the background, where the aurora borealis light up the night with green and blue hues dancing in the sky above. The reverse also features theengraved word “CANADA” and the dates “1867-2017” to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Confederation. The obverse features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt.
