In Chinese culture, the dragon is revered as a divine mythical creature, a symbol of power, strength, wealth and good fortune, and it is often portrayed in pursuit of chasing a luminous or flaming pearl.
The flaming pearl is viewed as a metaphor for wisdom, enlightenment and spiritual essence. It is also said to rid a person of their troubles and bring them career success as well as fortune and good health. The dragons are traditionally shown with their mouths open and their eyes wide, as they endeavour to catch the prized treasure.

High Relief Design
The coin’s reverse depicts exquisitely detailed representations of a dragon, a phoenix and a flaming pearl, with a stylised representation of clouds in the background. The design includes The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark.
The coin’s high relief reverse and obverse are minted on concave surfaces to ensure the optimum flow of metal is achieved by the strike of the die.
Australian Legal Tender
Issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965, the coin’s obverse depicts the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the 2017 year-date and the monetary denomination.
