The flying boats of the Second World War were prized for their long-range flight capabilities, but it was an amphibious version of the Consolidated PBY Catalina seaplane that caught the eye of the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF). Re-designated as the Consolidated Canso and manufactured here in Canada, this legendary anti-submarine patrol bomber is brought to life once more on this third (and final) coin in the Aircraft of the Second World War series.
SPECIAL FEATURES
THIRD AND FINAL COIN in a series featuring aircraft famously piloted at home or overseas during the Second World War (1939-1945).
Detailed engraving depicts the Consolidated Canso in action over the North Sea, while selective colour re- creates the colours and markings of RCAF No. 162 Squadron.
Attention to historical accuracy extends to the use of the effigy of King George VI on the obverse, as it appeared on Canadian coins issued during the Second World War.
Crafted from 99.99% pure silver, this coin has a limited mintage of just 7,500 worldwide.
Available for purchase individually or as part of a subscription to the three-coin series.
The artistry and theme makes this a fantastic addition to any historical-, military- or aircraft-themed collection.
A valued collector item for aviation enthusiasts and collectors, or a deeply meaningful keepsake for those whose loved ones served in the war.
DESIGN
The reverse design by Canadian artist David A. Oram features an engraved depiction of the amphibious Consolidated Canso in action in the Atlantic theatre of war. Selective colour re-creates the camouflage colours and markings of RCAF No. 162 Squadron—specifically the white-grey fuselage, as well as the blue and green camouflage pattern along the upper wing and tail surfaces. The reporting marks “T” and “9816” are associated with a Canadian Canso piloted by Flt. Lt. R.E. McBride who, on June 3, 1944, dropped four depth charges to destroy U-477 (engraved in the background) in the waters of the North Sea, off the coast of Norway. The obverse features the effigy of King George VI by T.H. Paget.
