The fifth issue of the Canada’s Wildlife series, reissued in 2021, is dedicated to the American Black Bear (Ursus americanus). The motive depicts a detailed close-up of the head of an adult Black Bear in color. The reverse presents the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, the year of issue and the denomination “5 DOLLARS”. The American black bear is also called “baribal” and is widespread in Canada and in the North and West of the USA. An estimated 700,000 specimens now live in the dense forests of North America and share their habitat with grizzly bears, which are not only larger and heavier, but are also considered more dangerous. Black bears reach a body length of up to 1.80 m and male specimens can weigh up to 225 kg on average. The fur is not always completely black in color, but can also have light or cinnamon shades. While the American black bear can live to be 30 years old in captivity, the life expectancy in the wild is often only 10 years – which is due in particular to hunting. The Maple Leaf Black Bear silver coin in color is delivered in a protective capsule including an illustrated product card.
