The Wedge-Tailed Eagle series of coins has only been available for a few years, but it was an instant hit when it made its debut. The Perth Mint struck this 2018 2 oz. silver proof. It’s made of .9999 fine silver and the version shown here is actually a piedfort. That means this specimen is twice as thick and twice as heavy as its 1 oz. proof counterpart. Mintage of this stunning coin is limited to just 3,000 pieces.
Stunning New Eagle Design by Mercanti
Since this coin was issued by Australia, the obverse features a detailed portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. This version was created by Ian Rank-Broadley. His initials are just below Her Majesty’s neck.
The reverse features a new Wedge-Tailed Eagle design by John Mercanti. Mercanti is known for the years he spent as Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint and the many designs that he created for U.S. coins. The date, mintmark, and silver content are inscribed on this side.
