The sixth issue in the series “The Universe” is dedicated to the Asteroid. The coin was struck from one ounce of 99.99% pure silver and features a depiction of an asteroid in color. Also included are the inscriptions “CANADA” and “FINE SILVER 1 OZ ARGENT PUR”. The reverse features the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, the year of issue, the dates “1952-2022” and the denomination “5 DOLLARS”.
Asteroids, also called minor planets or planetoids, are small, rocky celestial bodies that orbit the sun in the solar system. Due to their size, they can pose a potential threat to Earth in the event of a collision course. Scientists around the world have been studying the phenomenon of asteroids since the 19th century. The astronomical bodies can provide information about the formation and development of our solar system.
