This amazing series features nine depictions of angels created in various times.
According to the Christian tradition, when Lucifer rebelled against God and urged the third part of angels to rebellion, Michael was to act first against him with a shout, “Who is like God!”. In the early Christian and Byzantine iconography, the Archangel is usually portrayed as the guardian of the Kingdom of Heaven or as an assisting figure (together with the Archangel Gabriel) at the throne of God. Archangel Michael is the first and most important of the angels who was given a special trust by God. He is a fighter’s spirit and the leader of fighting souls. The presentation of Archangel Michael is based on the Greek icon of Constantinople from the first half of the 14th century, i.e. from the time of the strong influence of Western art on Byzantium. The original is currently in the Museum of Byzantine and Christian Art in Athens.
