Celebrate the history and artistry of Canadian circulation coinage with this fine silver 50-cent piece—part of the Royal Canadian Mint’s new series featuring Canada’s six circulation coins. Each beautiful coin is composed of five ounces of fine silver and features selective gold plating on both the reverse and the obverse.
SPECIAL FEATURES
This 5-ounce fine silver 50-cent coin features Canadian engraver Thomas Shingles’s Canadian Coat of Arms design, first issued in 1959. This design has since been used continuously on Canadian 50-cent coins, with only two exceptions.
Part of the Royal Canadian Mint’s exciting 6-coin series of 5-ounce fine silver versions of Canadian circulation coinage.
Selective gold plating on both the reverse and obverse sides of the coin makes this series particularly lovely and exceptionally unique.
With a very limited mintage of only 1,500 coins per issue, this series is sure to be highly sought after by collectors.
Drawing its inspiration from minting itself, this coin makes an exquisite gift, an inspiring introduction to collecting, or an important addition for any collector interested in Canadian subjects, Canadian and international circulation coinage, or minting history.
DESIGN
The reverse design features Canadian engraver Thomas Shingles’s Canadian Coat of Arms design. A lion holding a Union Jack flag on the left and a unicorn holding a flag bearing three French fleurs-de-lys on the right support a central shield divided into five sections bearing historical emblems of England, France, Scotland, and Ireland, as well as a sprig of three maple leaves. The shield is encircled with a ribbon representing the Order of Canada bearing the motto Desiderantes meliorem patriam, which means “desiring a better country.” The shield is surmounted by a royal helmet within a garland of maple leaves, upon which stands a crowned lion holding a maple leaf. St. Edward’s Crown, symbolizing Canada’s constitutional monarchy, rests above the lion, which symbolizes Canada’s sovereignty. The motto A Mari usque ad Mare (“from sea to sea”) appears in a ribbon below the shield, along with a “compartment” or garland composed of the floral emblems of England, Scotland, France, and Ireland. The Coat of Arms is gold-plated, as is with the raised edge. The obverse features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt. Her Majesty’s portrait is gold-plated, along with the raised obverse edge.
